Konstantinos Koutitsas
HFM

Konstantinos Koutitsas is a Software Engineer at HFM, where he builds and scales high throughput payment systems under strict reliability and performance constraints.

With over 7 years of experience across backend engineering, machine learning and DevOps, he has worked on distributed systems, large-scale data pipelines and simulation driven models. His experience spans large scale retail platforms, real time trading/betting applications and geospatial systems before focusing on financial systems where correctness and reliability are critical.

His current focus is on designing resilient architectures that handle sudden traffic spikes, ensuring correctness, observability and performance in systems where failure is not an option.

When Traffic Spikes, Your Architecture Tells the Truth
Quickie (INTERMEDIATE level)
MC 3

“Everything works… until it doesn’t.”

We’ve all seen the Green Dashboards. Average execution times are normal, deployments are passing, and the system is “working fine”. Or is it? In reality, most systems are held together by “temporary” solutions that stay hidden in the shadows of average traffic, until a spike hits.

In the high stakes world of financial transactions at HFM, a traffic spike is a truth teller. It unmasks the reality of your concurrency model, database locking and service boundaries.

This talk is an architectural journey through a system pushed to its limit. We will move beyond the “happy path” to look at the gritty reality of synchronous bottlenecks in an async world and the critical engineering pivot required to move toward a resilient, message-driven architecture.

In this talk we will explore:

  • The Illusion of Stability: Why “green” dashboards lie and how average metrics mask the systemic risks of synchronous bottlenecks in an async world.
  • The Reality of Contention: How high concurrency spikes unmask “noisy neighbor” effects in shared infrastructure, starving mission-critical API flows.
  • Defense-in-Depth Idempotency: Shifting from reactive database exceptions to a proactive multi-stage “shield” architecture that protects the source of truth from transaction exhaustion.
  • The Path to Resilience: Defining the tactical pivot toward a decoupled, message-driven future where financial integrity is guaranteed, even when the infrastructure is under fire.
